Click the image for a larger view. These rats are about 5 inches long excluding the tail. They were left dead at the edege of my property where they are normally eaten by a local bob cat. But as you can see from this photo and the 2 close ups that something appears to have pulled them into the sandy soil. I have 2 guesses, some skinks eat small rodents or perhaps a shrew. I do see tunnels in the lawn and vegetable garden which I had always thought were moles. I've also cut skinks with a shovel blade when planting shrubs. But a mole does not eat meat so perhaps the tunnels I've seen are shrews?
