Purple Martins
We found a purple martin home for sale at a tag sale for $15.00. So cheap we had to give it a try. It is not our first try we paid full price for the same nest box and stuck it in a big field in Connecticut where we used to live. It sat empty for 15 years and is still sitting empty in that field as far as I know.
But our new nest box here in SWFL was visited by purple martins just months after we set it up in December of 2005. Those visitors never nested but apparently they remembered the nest because this year we have a couple (and we think babies) living above our boat. We first noticed them here about early March, 2007 and about April 10, 2007 we were satisfied they had nested and were going to stay.
These photos were taken the morning of April 17, 2007. It seems this couple is feeding some young ones. There seems to be a tiny peeping as they go in and out of the nest.
Placement of your Purple Martin nest box is very important. Learn more about Purple Martins at The Purple Martin Conservation Association.

Left is a wide view of the area we put the nest box. Placement is important, Purple Martins are very fussy about where they live. Check the links above for where to put your Purple Martin nest box.
